Outcome 2.3 Resource for young children's literacy and numeracy

The Early Childhood Learning Resource (DEEWR 2007) consists of three elements
  1. Cards for parents to introduce and develop early literacy and numeracy learning of their young children
  2. A tool for early childhood educators to reflect on and assess the effectiveness of literacy and numeracy approaches;
  3. An overview of current literature relating to early literacy and numeracy
The resource is available online and each element can be downloaded as needed. Hard copies are available from the My Child website

The resource materials include
1. Literature Review
When written this was an overview of current understandings of how children learn, including philosophies and approaches to early learning. While somewhat dated the review contains some relevant information that would offer support for National Quality Framework requirements with an overview of current pedagogy, child development theory and philosophy in the education and care sectors along with various approaches to development and learning.

2. Early Childhood Literacy and Numeracy Cards
A set of each designed to show the literacy and numeracy opportunities in everyday events and happenings.  This would be a useful resource for sharing ideas about literacy and numeracy when working with families.  The cards could be used in a variety of ways to complement literacy and numeracy kits, or the ideas used in newsletters or other documentation that makes pedagogy and literacy and numeracy learning visible.

3. Building Good Practice
A booklet for preschools and childcare centre educators to explore different ways of reflecting on practice.  This in turn provides a space for learning,innovation and improving practice.  I would assist educators as individuals, as teams or whole services to examine their effectiveness in stimulating and providing for young children's literacy and numeracy skills using a reflective process.  The booklet offers opportunity to think differently about interactions that support literacy and numeracy learning, and offers ways to systematically plan for improvement.  The booklet will assist in meeting the requirements of the National Quality Standard and plan for meeting the outcomes of the Early Years Learning Framework.
